The issue I have with this "book" is that half way through, the story is suspended and then you have to buy the other half of it to see how it concludes. The way the story is written, there is no doubt whatsoever that it is not a completed tale. The second book entitled "Diver Down" picks up exactly as the next chapter in "Good Man Gone".I find it aggravating that both pieces are not sold as a single book. In my case, I was traveling and downloaded the first book to my Kindle I couldn't finish the book until I returned from my trip and had access to the internet again. Story is smaltzy, but typical of the author's writing which makes it a great 'beach read', but beware of the requirement to also buy the second half.

Overall I enjoyed this book, the way the two murders, while seemingly unrelated, are really tied together inextricably. Good use of following the clues! I really felt like I was right there with her discovering what was really goingnon. What I found very distracting was the constant references to the Marilyn Monroe look alike issue. Seriously? And that her mother also was a dead ringer? Because many readers today may not even remember Marilyn or have a clear image in their minds what she even looked like, I thought this aspect could have been downplayed...a lot! Some of the characters could have been developed more, like her Dad, Tommy Watts and some of the family members, Uncle Morro and Aunt Miriam.
With twists and turns, mysteries keep one on edge but remain one step ahead of the reader. Usually the dark and gloomy tone found in most mystery novels is enhanced by the tension augmented by characterization. A. W. Hartoin’s choice of subtle humor through his characters and descriptions revitalizes the mystery genre. Mercy Watts, although not a doctor and not the son her father probably expected, does maintain a role in the medical profession when she is not solving murders. Her resemblance to Marilyn Monroe also adds to the levity of plot. The aromas that accompany her side-kick, Aaron, those of “hotdogs, chili cheese fries, and some king of drugstore cologne,” help to make this an memorable pair of investigators. Along with Dr. Grace, who performs autopsies, "A Good Man Gone," introduces the reader to a series of characters that are engaging and lively. Hartoin’s juxtaposition of characters and plot provide the right amount of tension to keep a reader engaged. No small detail is ignored, such as when Mercy provides insight to the cats owned by her parents “The Siamese weren’t there yowling at me, threatening to shred my ankles, so I ignored their bowls and went for the expresso machine.” In the middle of an investigation, this provides the comic relief needed.
This is a read that will keep you entertained and riveted to your seats as the dogs beg to be walked and dinner clamors to be made!
Mercy, a nurse by trade, thinks she’s in for a relaxing time while her parents are away on a cruise. Nope, not going to happen. When her ex-cop turned private eye dads old partner winds up dead, her dad has a feeling that somethings not right. When he has a feeling like that, he’s usually right. Since he’s not there to investigate himself, he has Mercy do it for him.
I truly enjoy cozy mysteries. This had humor and intrigue, which made it an easy read. I did get a little bored at times, especially with the comparisons to Marilyn Monroe, and we knew early on that Mercy was reluctant, but it was repeated too often. Then there were spelling and grammatical errors. This is the reason for the 3 star review. Enjoyable, but not a series I think I will pursue.
The main character of this book is a Marilyn Monroe look-alike named Mercy. From the beginning of the book I felt like I was missing something. Making her a Marilyn look-like did absolutely nothing for the story. All it did was add an element of complete unbelievability and made her seem shallow and self absorbed. She is very focused on her weight and the character of her Aunt is confusing. Is she there to show that Mercy can like people despite them being overweight or is she a pity party or is she just another person this heroine feels better than. I think the concept of the book could have been developed into something good that leaves you wanting more, but it wasn't and it doesn't. She's selfish, shallow, spoiled, kind of mean spirited, and really not interesting.
This is a well written mystery! Great characters, an interesting plot, lots of suspects, and enough funny bits to provide a relief from the action. Mercy Watts is a great main character. She is smart, but not intimidatingly so. She is pretty, but would rather be more ordinary. She is sarcastic and quick with a put-down or comeback, but there is much more to her than that. She is someone I can't wait to get to know better. Even though Mercy is the focus of the story, the other characters are also well rounded and well thought out. The plot moves steadily toward the conclusion without being obvious. The author managed to avoid many of the clichés that abound in this genre. If you like cozy mysteries I think you will enjoy this book. There are so many poorly entries in the genre these days that it is a joy to find an exception.
